19 November – The Dental Circle

2nd Dental Circle meeting, Board Room, Guy’s Hospital London. Chaired by Professor Dianne Rekow, Dean of the Dental Institute, King’s College London. As a new member I was pleased to be part of this initiative. Its aim is to develop a fund from the membership fees which can then be distributed  to support students and research. Members include alumni, staff and former staff and all are encouraged to put forward ideas and comments. Prior to the meeting there was a tour of some of the clinical facilities which demonstrated how the most up to date technology was being applied to the curriculum. Hopefully I will be able to put forward some of the views held by the British Society for the Study of Cranio-Mandibular Disorders.

3 November – London School of Osteopathy

This was a return visit and my presentation was given to 5th year students and the emphasis was on the importance of an integrated approach to treatment.

My first talk was entitled “The Functional Orthodontic/Osteopathy Connection” and demonstrated the cranial strains associated with malocclusions, including the imbalance of the  maxilla & mandible.

The second talk was entitled “The Effects of Jaw Problems on the Rest of the  Body” and demonstrated such areas as airways, snoring, sleep apnoea,  OME, headaches, forward head posture, Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction and movement disorders such as Tourettes, Torticollis and Parkinsons.

The presentation concluded with Dr Brendan Stack’s video on his treatment of Tourettes & Torticollis (Cervical Dystonia) patients treated with an oral splint.
