Summertime is a quiet period for meetings & courses but several items of interest have come my way.
Firstly there is the 3D video by Dr Paul Coceancig which shows the changes in the airway when the maxilla is developed and the mandible is advanced – see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGbWQZ2W1vw. Functional orthodontists would prefer a slower rate of development for the maxilla and a non-surgical approach to mandibular advancement, nevertheless, the video clearly demonstrates the anatomical changes.
Secondly, the American Association of Sleep Medicine and the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine have issued a joint clinical practice guideline for Oral Appliance Therapy. The new guideline supports increased teamwork between physicians and dentists to achieve optimal treatment of patients with OSA.
Professor Kevin O’Brien’s blog can make interesting reading and I was prompted to make a comment on a recent posting. However his latest one regarding sleep disordered breathing is of the most interest to me so far. You might like to follow the dialogue!
