Myobrace course 21,22 March 2015 London.

Dr Dan Hanson presented this two day course. He introduced the various appliances that make up the Myobrace range and showed a number of videos to show how MRC (Myofunctional Research Company) introduce the concept of Myobraces to parents and patients. MRC has put together an excellent set of interactive cartoon DVDs to instruct and motivate patients to carry out the various muscle exercises which are a major factor in successful treatment outcome. There was a practical session on wire bending and Dan demonstrated the design and fitting of the BWS (Bent Wire System). The wire is 0.8 Biosteel and the design is similar to the ALF (Advanced Light-wire Functional) however, being more robust, it is more suitable for younger ages.

Dan has recently lectured at King’s Dental Society by the request of the students and the interest that he had raised was evidenced by the fact that three King’s 4th year students together with two students from UClan were among the 27 attendees.

I had been asked to give a talk on the TMJ. As usual, I began by showing Dr Brendan Stack’s excellent video on movement disorders and I followed this with a short section describing the anatomy and ideal action of the joint. I then went on to describe Temporo-Mandibular Joint Dysfunction and the serious effects it can have on the rest of the body. If a derangement or a contributing factor can be detected early then correction can be addressed before serious problems ensue.  Carrying out a Range of Movement measurement as part of patient evaluation would indicate a derangement. The ideal being 45-50mm vertical opening and 10-12 mm for lateral movement.

Unlike treatment with fixed braces, the philosophy of Dento-Facial Orthopaedic is to examine the muscle function, bone form and the alignment of the teeth and to carry out correction as early as is practical. There are a number of appliances which address all these factors eg; Orthotropic’s Biobloc, the ALF etc. However, the Myobrace system, being worn only one waking hour and while sleeping, is particularly child friendly. It has already been introduced in to over 100 countries and I think it will soon be offered here to patients as an alternative to train tracks in the teenage years.
