The Children’s Airway First Foundation – CAFF

This collaborative society has the exact same aims as our Society for Dentofacial Growth and Function. It concentrates on prevention and early intervention. This group being interviewed are putting together a parents guide for home observation of their growing child. The intention is to provide parents with the knowledge to recognise certain signs and symptoms so that they can seek out the appropriate clinician/clinicians for their child. At the same time, this panel is aware that these parents can raise awareness for the various health providers. “Consumers drive the Demand Curve”! It is the public and not the profession who will bring about the change. There is a wealth of information for parents on their website: https://www.childrensairwayfirst.org/

I am an Orthopaedodontic practitioner in South Africa. I do orthopaedic orthodontics on young kids with fixed appliances with the main aim to restore their normal growth and open their airways. I expierience a constant battle against my orthodontist collegues due to the fact that they do not understand airway an TMD, but only create smiles at the cost of the patients health. I found this new endevour to collaborate very inspiring because I have been applying the right approach for almost 30 years now and will need any advice on how to get the word out there on how seriously important it is for parents to stop having their kids teeth taken out and have the airway being messed up for the sake of a smile. I train dentists in using the right approach now for years. Please let me know how I can get involved in this important health initiative and get parents informed.

Dear Dr Bert, Thank you for getting touch. You are not alone in this dilemma. In the UK the General Dental Council look unkindly on anyone carrying out early intervention since treatment with fixed appliances in the teenage has been accepted as the gold standard. Malocclusion is taught as being of genetic origin so just the symptoms are treated. However, this collaboration is beginning to bring together a number of knowledgeable dentists and inspiring others. With the support of this Society we will have a stronger voice and will be able to make this alternative approach to treatment known to the general public. In time attitudes will change. You can use the contact form on the website to send in your details. I can then place you on our email database and keep you in the loop. You can also supply your mobile number and join our WhatsApp group. I know that you are really helping your young patients. There is a webinar going out tomorrow night but it will be recorded and available as a link in the Events section of the website.
