Still no change!

I have recently viewed this video again. It was recorded in November 2010. The spokesperson for the Australian Orthodontic Society answers questions put to him by Dr Derek Mahony.

I am reminded of a similar one recorded in the UK in back in 1999 – Dr John Mew “Dispatches”. Yet, to this day, it seems that little has changed and fixed appliance therapy in the teenage is still regarded as the norm despite the evidence that relapse is the most likely outcome.

Malocclusion may not be just a cosmetic factor, rather, it could be a sign of an underlying health problem – one that is affecting an individual’s quality of life. It may be mouth breathing, sleep disordered breathing or even sleep apnoea, to list just few. Early intervention and an integrated approach to treatment must surely be the way forward.
