The first weekend in March promises to be a landmark occurrence in the orthodontic world and I want you to be aware of it, and if you can, participate in it.

First of all, Boston U. is hosting a two-day symposium called  Sleep Disordered Breathing/Obstructive Sleep Apnea Symposium, spearheaded by orthodontist John Walker.  Featured speakers include German Ramirez, Steve Olmos, Marianna Evans, and others.  This is a huge effort put together in a university setting.  http://www.bu.edu/dental/ce/symposia/sdb-osa/

The Moyers Symposium out of the University of Michgan Department of Orthodontics has been discussing current research in growth and development for the past 43 years.  The monographs that come out of this symposium are required reading for residents and practitioners alike.    This year their topic is: Sleep Apnea—What Every Clinician (and Patient) Should Know.   The event is being moderated by Jim McNamara. Included in the lineup are Sean Carlson, Lou Chmura, and Scott Conley.  My read of the program has me thinking that they still think that sleep apnea is THE topic and that the size of the airway is the only factor and are still paying no attention to function nor etiology.  No matter. It’s a start.  The orthodontic profession is coming out of it’s own sleepless night. http://www.moyerssymposium.com/
And last but not least, the second annual symposium of the American Academy of Myofunctional Sciences will be in Chicago, entitled “Sleep Disordered Breathing, Craniofacial Growth: Early Intervention and Patient Outcomes”. Now that what I’m talkin’ about.    This program is filled with my peeps (and I’ll be speaking on Integrative Myofunctional Orthodontics).  I am so excited that I will be hearing Bob Corruccini (“How anthropology informs the diagnosis of orthodontic malocclusion”), Christian Guilleminault (the father of pediatric sleep medicine), Maria Pia Villa (functional orthodontics and airway), Kevin Boyd (Darwinian Dentistry), and many many more.  You have got to look at this program.  https://aamsinfo.org/chicago-2017/
I don’t know what you are doing that weekend, but I’m thinking you’ve got some time to change your plans.
Looking Forward (to the world changing….)
Barry
